What is a cookie?

A cookie is a small text file placed on your device by the websites that you visit. Cookies are then sent back to this website on each subsequent visit, or to another webpage that recognizes that cookie. Cookies are used in order to make the website work, or to work more efficiently, as well as to provide information to the owners of the website. Such information may be used to provide a more personalized and responsive service.

Types of cookies

There are different types of cookies depending on their origin, function, and lifespan.

First-party cookies are cookies that are placed by us on our website that you visit.

Third-party cookies are cookies that are placed by a third party on our website that you visit (e.g., cookies placed by Google).

Generally, websites use cookies that perform the following three functions:

  • Strictly necessary cookies: A strictly necessary cookie is a type of cookie that is used by the website to function properly, without which the site would not work. This type of cookie does not collect any personally identifiable information about you and does not track your browsing habits. Strictly necessary cookies are essential for websites to work because they help improve your experience on the site and make it easier for you to use. For example, cookies can be used to remember your language preferences and other settings that you’ve set in order to make your visit as efficient as possible.
  • Non-necessary cookies: these cookies are not necessary for a website for its basic functionality. If these cookies are disabled, the website will still function smoothly, and the user can access its services. These often have a different purpose that is unrelated to the functionalities of the website. For e.g., cookies set by Facebook pixel.

Google analytics

If you opt-in for the use of all cookies, then we use Google Analytics to track how you use our website and how effective the Adwords ads on Google search result pages are. The information obtained is anonymized, transferred to and stored by Google on servers in the United States. Read Google’s privacy policy for more information, as well as the specific privacy policy of Google Analytics. Google uses this information to keep track of how our website is used, to provide reports on our website and to provide its advertisers with information about the effectiveness of their campaigns. Google may provide this information to third parties if Google is legally obliged to do so, or insofar as these third parties process the information on behalf of Google. We do not have any influence on this. We have not allowed Google to use the obtained analytics information for other Google services.

For example, Google Analytics uses a set of cookies to collect information and report site usage statistics without personally identifying individual visitors to Google. ‘_ga’, the main cookie used by Google Analytics, enables a service to distinguish one visitor from another and lasts for 2 years. Any site that implements Google Analytics, including Google services, uses the ‘_ga’ cookie. Each ‘_ga’ cookie is unique to the specific property, so it cannot be used to track a given user or browser across unrelated websites.
